Black representation and Information Design: an analysis of the infographic series “Some babies are born black”

Abstract

This article presents an analysis of the infographic series “Some babies are born black” by illustrator Chidiebere Ibe, having as core purpose reflections on information design, Black representation, and contemporary design. To this end, bibliographical reviews were conducted, developing studies on the concepts of information design and Black representation and outlining criteria to understand the construction of the series as a positive case of representation in contemporary design.

Author Biographies

Julia Santos Schuelter, Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina

PhD candidate and Master in Design from the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC), with research focused on the development of semantic guidelines for beauty products aimed at the black population. She works in the areas of Decolonial Design, Black Representation, Human Factors, and Design and Society, investigating how visual and symbolic language influences processes of recognition and belonging. With a degree in Product Design from the Federal Institute of Santa Catarina (IFSC), she is interested in furthering discussions on decoloniality and design methodologies committed to diversity, equity, and social transformation.

Miguel Vassali, Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina

Adjunct professor of Graphic and Industrial Design courses at the State University of Santa Catarina (UDESC). PhD candidate and Master in Visual Arts in the field of Visual Arts Education at the State University of Santa Catarina. Graduated in Design from the University of Western Santa Catarina (2012). Graduated in Visual Arts from the State University of Santa Catarina. Participates in the Entre Paisagens CNPq/Udesc research group and the Apotheke Painting Studio Study Group extension program.

 

Celio Teodorico dos Santos, Universidade do Estado de Santa Catarina

Bachelor's degree in Industrial Design from the Federal University of Paraíba (1983). Master's degree in Production Engineering from the Federal University of Santa Catarina (1998), in the area of Design and Product Management. PhD in Mechanical Engineering, in the area of Mechanical Systems Design from UFSC - Federal University of Santa Catarina on December 10, 2009. He is an Associate Professor in the Design Department at the State University of Santa Catarina. He has experience in the field of Industrial Design, with an emphasis on Industrial Design, working mainly in the following areas: Design Research, Industrial Design, Design Thinking, Ergonomics, consulting in the development of electronic products, hospital equipment, special projects, and furniture. He is a researcher in Methodological Prospects in Design, Product Language, Ubiquitous and Pervasive Technology and Assistive Technology, Ergonomic Research, and Representational Methods for Design Education. He also conducts research in Interaction Design. He is an associate professor at Udesc and a permanent professor in the Graduate Program in Design (PPG Design) at UDESC. He was coordinator of the Institutional Evaluation Sectoral Commission (CSA) at CEART/UDESC and head of the Design Department at UDESC from March 17, 2011, to March 16, 2013. He was Assistant Curator of the 5th Design Biennial 2015 in Florianópolis - Design for All Exhibition. He was Deputy Coordinator of PPGDesign - Graduate Program in Design CEART UDESC. He is Coordinator of the Interaction Design Research Laboratory LPDI UDESC. He is Head of the Design Department.
