Abstract

Knowledge generated in design projects, properly captured and represented through Design Rationale systems, can be seen as a source of unique value and, therefore, as a source of competitive advantage for organizations. In this context, the potential of the Grasshopper Parametric Design system as a Design Rationale system is explored by comparing it to conventional gIBIS and QOC systems. Three comparative analysis criteria are applied: 1) syntax; 2) representativeness of design parameters and their relationships; and 3) representativeness of informational flow, in which, based on the DIKW framework, the informational processes performed in the use of the analyzed systems - research, ideate, evaluate, relate, and apply - are related to the four informational levels - data, information, knowledge, and wisdom. Analysis points to evidence that Grasshopper can be considered a Design Rationale system and suggests potential differentials compared to conventional systems, as well as directions for future research.

Guilherme Parolin, UFRGS

Assistant Professor in the Undergraduate Design Program at the School of Communication, Arts, and Design (FAMECOS) at PUCRS; co-founder / designer of educational games and toys (Imagine-me); and a Ph.D. candidate in Design (UFRGS). He holds a Bachelor's degree in Design - specializing in product design (UFRGS) and a Master's degree in Design (UFRGS), with research on the application of Social Network Analysis as a tool to study interactions in Collaborative Design. His ongoing doctoral thesis is situated in the realms of knowledge management and design education, focusing on facilitating the learning of creative decision-making processes by novice designers (provisional title: "Proposal of a didactic resource to support decision-making in creative processes through the representation of design knowledge"). With over 10 years of industry experience as a designer and as an academic researcher, his main interests and lines of scientific research lie at the intersection of the creative process (creativity applied to conceptual design) and data science (data visualization as support for business intelligence and processes).
