Abstract

This paper shows how the unique characteristics of plastics made possible the development of mass
communication technology (photography, the cinema and sound recording). It shows how, in a period of low
industrialization in Brazil, the use of plastics is established in the production of phonograph records when the
Odeon factory starts producing locally what had been made abroad.

Guilherme Cunha Lima

Guilherme Cunha Lima, (PhD), PPD - ESDI/UERJ.
Designer gráfico, atuou no mercado por quinze anos, ingressando no magistério superior na
UFPE, em 1980. Doutor (PhD) pela Universidade de Reading, Inglaterra. Desde 1995 é Professor
Adjunto da ESDI/UERJ, onde é coordenador do Programa de Pós-graduação em Design. É
pesquisador e consultor ad hoc do CNPq e de várias agencias governamentais.

Gerson Lessa

Gerson Lessa, mestrando no PPD - ESDI/UERJ.
É designer formado pela ESDI em 1985. Realiza uma pesquisa sobre o design em matérias
plásticas, abrangindo os séculos XIX e XX. Desenvolve no momento a dissertação “Os Plásticos: Panorama Histórico de Materiais e Design.” para o Mestrado no Programa de Pós-graduação em
Design da ESDI / UERJ.
